Residence Sigrid — A Space to Research, Reimagine and Breathe.

Residence Sigrid is an international and interdisciplinary center for womxn artists in Collioure, a village in the south of France on the Vermeille coast near the Spanish border.

A Place Marked by Artistic Legacy

Surrounded by vineyards and the Mediterranean Sea, Collioure has long inspired artists, including Swedish painter Sigrid Hjertén, who stayed in the village in 1929. The residency takes its name from her—anchoring its vision in a lineage of artistic exploration and cross-cultural exchange.

Time and Space for Deep Practice

Residence Sigrid offers three-week working residencies twice a year to professional artists and writers based in Sweden who identify as women, trans, or non-binary. Rooted in research and interdisciplinarity, the residency provides time for open-ended processes reflection, creative development, and the rare opportunity to step back, think and breathe.

Selection and Eligibility

Applications are reviewed by a jury, which awards two residencies per year—one artist or designer and one writer per session. Applicants are expected to be professionally active, based in Sweden, and aligned with the core principles of the Misschiefs manifesto.

An Extension of Misschiefs

As an independent branch of Misschiefs, Residence Sigrid is developed in its spirit: to support womxn artists and expand the visibility of their work across contexts. Here, artistic practice is understood as a space for resistance, reflection, and transformation across borders.

Engaging with the Place

Residents are invited to engage deeply with the local context—its people, language, nature, and crafts. The residency supports artistic development while encouraging meaningful cultural exchange between Sweden and the local cultures of Catalonia and France.

Residency Formats

Residence Sigrid is structured in two parts:

– A three-week, research-based residency held twice a year (May and September), hosting both artists or designers and writers.

– A longer production residency of up to twelve weeks, offering the possibility to return and develop a site-specific project in collaboration with local partners.

– The ambition is that after each residency period a publication will be produced based on the current theme.

From Research to Production

Participants may, during or after their stay, propose a project for an extended residency period. These longer stays can be structured consecutively or across multiple visits, supporting deeper engagement and production over time.

Pilot Phase and Launch

The pilot residency will take place in September 2026, with artist Catherine Anyango Grünewald and writer and historian Alexandra Loske invited as the first residents. The official launch of Residence Sigrid is scheduled for May 2027.

Open Call and Jury

The first Open Call will be published on June 04, 2026, with applications open until July 20, 2026. Selected participants will be announced in November 2026. Each year’s call will be centered around a specific theme.
